Victor Sarmiento, military veteran and dedicated father, is now one step away from obtaining the religious freedom to baptize his three-year-old son.  Victor Sarmiento is a practicing Catholic and court documents report his soon-to-be ex-wife, Lizette, forbids their child to be baptized in the Catholic Church.

“This will likely to be the final court date.  I feel very confident that we have a strong legal position,” said Leving.

Sarmiento, who attends the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Chicago, said, “I just want my son to be a part of the community of values that are taught in Catholic Church and baptism is the first step.”

Obesity can be defined as a medical condition in which one has an overwhelming amount of body fat that results in potentially having an adverse effect on your health. The BMI (body mass index: percentage of body fat and total body fat) for obese individuals range from 30 or more. Let’s not confuse Obese with Overweight, the latter being classified as having a BMI between 25 and 29.9.  So, being overweight is pre-obese.  Obesity is America is known for its large amount of obese persons among its population, and, strangely enough, children are not exempt from this category.

Obesity is “a leading preventable cause of death worldwide”(en.wikipedia.org), yet the rates of obesity in children are still increasing at staggering amounts! “Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 yrs. (www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/obesity/)”.  Why? Might we ask. Why… when obesity is associated with so many diseases (i.e. diabetes, cardiovascular, cancer, osteoarthritis)?  The main reason why someone reaches the status of obese is because of two primary things: poor diet and exercise.  Yes, obesity can be genetically inherited, but that status is not a death sentence.   So, don’t treat it like one.  A person is not obligated to that status just because both of his/her parents are obese.  He/she can change that by not excessively ingesting in high-caloric foods, and adapting to a regular exercise schedule.  Remember, we have to eat to live, but there are calories that won’t burn off until we tell them to.

Parents should take it in their control to monitor their children’s diets. It doesn’t have to be strict, but it does have to be nutritional!

• Limit the amount of sugared beverages: an idea would be to send a juicebox with lunch, and when your child comes home, everyone has water at the dinner table.
• Even as a parent who may not like vegetables, try to eat one you can tolerate so that you can be a model for your children.  After all, they will say “Well, you don’t eat peas”.
• Don’t leave children in their rooms all day behind their t.v. monitors or computer screens. Tell them to go outside and play, or join a community league…they’re young!

Think about it, you are prolonging the time they can have with their grandchildren disease-free! Please, let’s fight childhood obesity…to me, one of the most unnecessary medical conditions of the century.

This August 22nd 2010 “BABY” premiered at “The 14th Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival” as an official selection where it received an honorable mention prize for Best Short. Yancey Arias dedicates the film to his dear friend David Mills who passed on this year on March 30th 2010 just two days before production of “BABY” began. David Mills wrote and executive produce the hit Mini Series “Kingpin” on NBC  in 2003. Yancey Arias had the honor to play the lead role Miguel Cadenas, and had the chance to work with David closely in the development of that character. “I owe David my career” says Yancey Arias with love and respect.

Yancey also had the great pleasure of working with Edward James Olmos (”STAND AND DELIVER”, “BATTLE STAR GALACTICA”) on three film and Television Projects “AMERICAN FAMILY” (PBS), “WALK OUT” (HBO), and most recently “AMERICA” (Isla Films). It was on the set of “AMERICA” where Yancey says found the motivation to finally direct this year over many dinners talking film with Edward James Olmos. For many years Yancey has wanted to direct a film but it was only until this year he decided to take the leap. After twenty five years as an actor in the entertainment business Yancey  Arias felt ready to put together his team of artists in every department he could muster up to make this film.

In preparation for this journey into direction like so many young directors Yancey studied and loved to watch over and over again the films of  Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa, Clint Eastwood, Steven Soderbergh, Francis Ford Coppala, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. ADVICE FOR SINGLE DADS
There are many divorced, separated and single fathers who would like to take their children to the first day of school. This can cause conflict with their mother, leaving the children out in the cold.  However, this should not create conflict if managed appropriately. Emotion should never cloud the parental decision making process. Author and nationally renowned Fathers’ Rights attorney Jeffery M. - Plan Ahead

- Be Patient
Many fathers who have gone through a bitter divorce may find it difficult to reconnect with their children. Although this may be painful and awkward at first, with empathy, patience and practice, it does get better.

- Avoid Conflict
This day can be a stressful time for parents and children alike. Be aware of and perceptive to everyone’s feelings and realize that the first day of school can be tense and stressful for everyone.

- Be Flexible
Plans change, so you will have to be open and adaptable to positive change. If it turns out that it is not possible to take your children to their first day of school, then see if you can pick them up after school for some quality time or explore another opportunity for communication, bonding and support.

- Have Fun
Most importantly, remember how excited and anxious you were to begin another school year when you were a child? Stay cool and don’t let anyone ruin this wonderful experience for the children.

You may be at odds with your children’s mother, but do not let this affect your relationship with your children. They continue to need a loving and involved dad in whom they can rely on for guidance and support. Give your children the time, space, patience, unconditional love and acceptance they need.

Remember that you are still a father. Taking care of your children during this important day is your priority.
