SANTA BARBARA CHORAL SOCIETY ORGANIZING NATIONAL REQUIEM CONCERT REGISTRATION FOR 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11
Mozart “Requiem” to be sung by choral groups across the country at 3:00 pm on September 11
Santa Barbara, CA June 16, 2011- The venerable Santa Barbara Choral Society (SBCS) is the lead organizer of a 10th-year anniversary performance of Mozart’s Requiem across the nation. Similar to the “Rolling Requiem” that occurred on the first anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy (initiated by the Seattle Symphony Chorus), SBCS has already confirmed that more than 40 choruses around the country will participate in their own communities’ observation of the 10th anniversary by performing the Requiem. Starting at 3:00 pm on the East Coast, and rolling from time zone to time zone they will join the nation in a wave of remembrance with the healing and transformational power of Mozart’s incomparable music.
The Santa Barbara performance at The Granada Theater will be conducted by SBCS Music/Artistic Director JoAnne Wasserman and will include an orchestra, the 100-voice SBCS chorus, and singers from other choirs in the community who will be invited to sing that day. Santa Barbara’s Sister Cities organization is a co-sponsor for the local concert, and the Poet Laureate, Paul Willis, is creating a new work to be read at the concert.
SBCS is seeking support from businesses and organizations within the community so that admission to the concert will be free to the public. “As organizers of what is not just a community effort, but a nationwide movement to celebrate our heroes and honor the fallen, we hope to give people across the country a way to acknowledge the tragedy of 9/11 and at the same time continue the long process of recovery and moving forward with hope,” said “9/11/11 Requiem of Remembrance” Chairman Mary Dan Eades.
Organizations interested in participating in the “Requiem of Remembrance” in the Santa Barbara area or nationwide, should contact the Choral Society by calling: 805-965-6577 or visit the website: www.sbchoral.org/911project.
