Crime rate in New York is on the rise and the statistics of 2010 are pretty much disturbing. Murders are increased by 14 percent while rapes and other violent crimes rose by 26.7 percent. Increase in robberies was 4.89 percent, which makes the picture of New York even more horrible. NYPD has been failed to control the crime rate which is quite alarming.
The reason of this increasing crime rate could be rooted to the 1980-1990 era where cocaine polluted the society. Crime and drugs are correlated to a large extent and presence of drugs in the society is becoming more than just a catalyst. Trafficking of drugs has attracted many youngsters to make what they believe is quick money.
A story was reported a few months back when, Maksim Kapelnik, 23 years old, was arrested in the area near Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, NY. He was driving a new BMW X6 with a large supply of Marijuana on the back seats. NYPD tracked him down and detained him; which was in part due to him disobeying a stop sign. Efforts and strategies are being devised by the police to check this alarming crime rate, however, no efforts have been advantageous in reducing the fundamental problems.
In areas like Bronx, statistics shows that most of the victims and committers were young. People have different opinions on the increasing crime rates. Some of them consider economic downturn, the reason for the increasing crime rates. An Anti-gun campaigner, Gloria Cruz says, “I think the economy is driving people to a point where they feel desperate, they feel trapped like a mouse in a maze – they don’t know which way to turn, what to do, and some of them are really losing control.”
Whatever is the reason, Government has to play its role to control this worsening situation. People pay taxes to Government and expect security in return, for their lives and property in a country founded on freedom.318 views
